Comparative Study of the Vestibular Function Test to Change of Thermal Stimuli
Lee Jung-Hun

Abstract
The vestibular system, vision, proprioceptive system and other sensory organs provide the information of control of body equilibrium and posture. These informations are integrated in the centeral nervous system. The damage of these reflex arcs can be lead to a complain of dizziness. The vestibular function test to assess the patients with dizziness has changed with technical improvement. The caloric test is one of basic methods for vestibular evaluation but the test is carried out in many different methods and still not standardized in our country. This study was performed to analyze the vestibular function by various methods to change of thermal stimuli with irrigation of 250§¢ of 44¡É, 30¡É, 23¡É, 15¡É water in normal subjects. The obtained results were as follows : The properties of vestibulo-ocular reflex induced by change of stimuli were analysed in terms of latent period, duration, frequency, amplitude and slow component velocity. The latent period, duration and frequency had great variations in the same thermal stimuli, which showed limited value to assess caloric responses. Amplitude and slow component velocity were increased by increasing the intensity of thermal stimulation but they were not proportional to the intensity of stimulation. However, slow component velocity was useful for quantifying the effect of caloric test and the most sensitive indicator for vestibular damage because it had well responded to thermal stimulation.
